Religious Freedom Conference at the University of Eastern Finland
Joensuu | February 22-24, 2018
Civil Liberties or personal freedoms are personal guarantees and freedoms that the government cannot abridge – either by law or by juridical interpretation.
Our ancestors who fought for civil liberties called religious freedom “the first of our liberties” and the “most cherished” of all our freedoms.
Many contemporary states have a constitution that enumerate and seek to guarantee civil liberties. Furthermore, some states have signed key conventions such as the European Convention on Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The constitutions of some countries do guarantee in theory many civil liberties. However, human rights groups like Amnesty International or Freedom House have warned that some countries have seriously curtailed central civil liberties.
Our liberties are a gift, not only for ourselves but for all nations and peoples who yearn to be free. Therefore, it is our duty to defend the heritage of religious liberty and particularly scholars have to be advocates for religious liberty if it is under attack.
Concerted efforts have been made to deny the right of free exercise to religious belief and expression. That’s why well-known scholars from Europe and North America will come together at the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu, 22-24 February, 2018, to think about the core objective of religious freedom in West and East. The complete program can be found here.

International Conference: 1917 and the Consequences
Akademie Sankelmark, Germany | November 24-26, 2017
Beyond doubt, the Russian Bolshevik Revolution in October 1917 was one of the most defining events in the history of the 20th century. It has coined the past century and the consequences – including its myths – have remained noticeable until today. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, Katarzyna Stokłosa (University of Southern Denmark) and Gerhard Besier (Sigmund Neumann Institute) hosted an international conference at the Akademie Sankelmark (Flensburg, Germany) in November 2017. It dealt primarily with the different histories of reception and resonances of this history-making year. The focus laid on different national perceptions, interpretations and historiographic views of the “Red October” as well as its far-reaching consequences – especially in a European perspective. The full programme of the conference can be found here and the report of the conference can be read here.
The conference was supported by the German Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur (Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship), whose emphasis for 2017 lies on “Communism: Utopia and Reality”.
