Book Presentation: Jehovas Zeugen in Europa - Geschichte und Gegenwart, Band I
Frankfurt | April 5,2013
The presentation of the new book "Jehovah's Zeugen in Europa – Geschichte und Gegenwart" (Jehovah's Witnesses in Europe - History and present) (Volume I of a trilogy) of Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. h. c. Gerhard Besier, director of the Sigmund Neumann Institute, and Prof. Dr. Katarzyna Stokłosa from the University of Sønderborg (Denmark), in the History Museum of Frankfurt / Main arose big interest.
In the good one hour-long evening program, the four speakers gave an overview of the history, purpose and perspectives of the book project. This made the, close to 400, visitors so curious that they took hundreds of books home.
In fact, the reader will find a fascinating insight into a hitherto little-known part of European history: eight different studies of Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain, in which several speakers highlighted the situation of the religious community of the Jehovah's Witnesses throughout Europe and pointed to the different situations in which the society in general and the small religious communities are confronted with in the national context nowadays. This was designed for a total of three volumes which constitute more than a mere but remarkable review of the question of how tolerant European society really is. It is also a reminder and a call, at the same time, not to take the fundamental right of individual religious freedom for granted and to internalize and preserve it.

Lecture: The current developments in Ukraine and the gas conflict between Russia and Ukraine
Beyond doubt, the Russian Bolshevik Revolution in October 1917 was one of the most defining events in the history of the 20th century. It has coined the past century and the consequences – including its myths – have remained noticeable until today. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, Katarzyna Stokłosa (University of Southern Denmark) and Gerhard Besier (Sigmund Neumann Institute) will be hosting a conference at the Academy Sankelmark (Flensburg, Germany) in October 2017. It will deal primarily with the different histories of reception and resonances of this history-making year. The focus will lie on different national perceptions, interpretations and historiographic views of the “Red October” as well as its far-reaching consequences – especially in a European perspective. The conference is backed by the German Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktator (Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship), whose emphasis for 2017 lies on “Communism: Utopia and Reality”.
